 The business ecosystems of the Mediterranean region are almost entirely constituted of small family businesses that in general operate locally. They are therefore quite different from the ecosystems existing in the Anglo-Saxon world, with their typical managerial businesses, advanced and efficient financial markets and the diffusion of venture capital and crowdfunding. Due to these differences, it is necessary to adapt – if not to radically revise – the theories, tools and models defined by the doctrine whose main points of reference are North European and North American ecosystems and start-ups. This need is also proportional to the high vulnerability of young businesses, regardless of the sectors and the geographical areas in which they operate, as no more than half of these newly established businesses overcome the impact with the market and reach the age of five.

The Conference Creating Sustainable Businesses in Mediterranean Countries – Theories, Tools and Success Stories is calling for scientists, entrepreneurs, professionals and startuppers interested in launching a common research project to elaborate operating principles and tools applicable in the creation of sustainable businesses, consistent with the Mediterranean ecosystem.

By presenting successful startup case studies, it will be possible to pinpoint the distinctive features of young successful business and to define general principles from which future entrepreneurs intending to launch new, sustainable initiatives in this part of the world can draw upon.

In keeping with this objective, we welcome articles and case studies on the following topics:

  1. Towards Defining a Model for Establishing Mediterranean Businesses – Small Business Networks, Districts and Cooperatives;
  2. Pre-incubation, Incubation and Follow Up Models;
  3. The Role of Strategic Partnerships and Networks in the Sustainability of Business Projects;
  4. The Role of Universities and Technology Transfer in the Creation of Businesses and Spinoffs;
  5. Case studies on start-ups and successful businesses in the Mediterranean region:

• Cultural, Artistic, Archaeological, Landscape and Environmental Resources;

• Fashion and Design: Between Tradition and Innovation – Entertainment, Cinema, Performances and Artistic Production;
