A year has passed since TRANSITION Social Innovation Journey started in Brussels last September 2013: the destination is to scale up 300 Social Innovations across Europe, testing and sharing innovative incubation methodologies and tools, generating a community of Social Innovation Incubation practitioners.
London, Paris Region, the Basque Country, Milan, Tampere, Ireland West: TRANSITION (TRANSNATIONAL NETWORK FOR SOCIAL INNOVATION INCUBATION) offers new paths to motivated European Social Innovators interested to enter new stages of the Social Innovation Journey, explore new opportunities, meet new fellow travelers, listen to new mentors, and explore new horizons.
TRANSITION partners have today developed a common framework methodology: we have named it the Social Innovation Journey (SIJ) as it focuses on the sequence of steps that a lead innovator may go through as each centre supports their scaling process providing the skills and capabilities they require to grow.
Between January and April 2014 project activities have been driven via dedicated Spark Session events organized by TRANSITION scaling centres: the six events reached out to more than 500 social innovators across Europe working as perfect catalysts for social innovators in Europe.
To date, more than 100 projects have been assessed and 90 entered the incubation programmes carried out by TRANSITION Scaling Centres, made of thematic collective workshops and 1:1 coaching and mentoring sessions. In this journey we met very different projects acting in various sectors, presenting different development stages and scaling needs, but with a common goal: make a change!
In the coming months, more social innovators and entrepreneurs will be supported developing their ideas, prototyping, testing, and scaling some of them at regional, national and international level. TRANSITION incubation programme will be open up to a new cohort of social innovators at the end of 2014: a new round of regional Spark Sessions will kick off this second phase.
Moreover, TRANSITION recently launched the Transnational StartUp Lab led by Denokinn, Young Foundation and New Factory, an acceleration programme dedicated to 6 promising social innovations willing to go international.
Around the scaling up process, partners have developed a common learning methodology that aims at generating new evidence about the role of incubation in scaling up social innovation. The TRANSITION consortium is doing this by testing shared methods and metrics for understanding the impact of incubation. There are only a few examples where local models of social innovation have successfully scaled across Europe.
We believe that by harnessing the power of a larger network we can ensure that successful local projects supported by a scaling centre can help address (or ‘bridge’) common social problems at a wider geographical level.
Building up a European Network of SI Incubation stakeholders (ESIIN), a “social innovation incubation lab”, TRANSITION will consider and propose the best approaches for different circumstances (regional & sectorial) by sharing and informing the SI community through dedicated activities.
The upcoming “ReAct! Social Innovation – Supporting social innovation through research, incubation and action” event is actually responding to this purpose: TRANSITION together with BENISI, TEPSIE and SI-Drive projects are organizing the 12-13 November 2014, in Lisbon (Portugal), a 2 day event where research and incubation stakeholders will debate the future of Social Innovation in Europe.
TRANSITION partners are also collecting the interest of incubators and other innovation support organizations (mentors, coaches, investors, researchers) interested in joining the “social innovation incubation lab” where to exchange about the Social Innovation Journey, test it, share good practices and create new linkages. If interested, please contact Chiara Davalli: firstname.lastname@example.org
TRANSITION is a dynamic community, made of social innovation practitioners; it is a social innovation incubation lab, built upon the willingness of leaving a trace and contribute to make a systemic change.
